y contains np.nan where the sensor reported nothing. Plot it against x so the missing stretches appear as gaps, rather than drawing a straight line across them as if the value had moved smoothly.

Return the Axes. Matplotlib already breaks a line at NaN, so the thing to avoid is quietly dropping or filling those points first.
